Common Concerns
-
Help with positioning baby for a deep, pain-free latch is one of the top reasons people seek lactation care. Breastfeeding should not cause nipple damage. During the consult, I will assess oral function and your baby’s whole body for any underlying causes for nipple pain.
-
I am skilled at supporting chronic “clogged ducts” and mastitis and can help make a plan to wean down oversupply or address inflammation that may be contributing.
-
During the consult I will review your health history, pregnancy, birth, current breastfeeding or pumping rhythms and what volume of milk baby is transferring at breast to view the full picture of the reason(s) you are experiencing low milk supply.
-
Pumping should be comfortable too! If it’s taking minutes to let down, nipples are swelling or you have low milk supply a proper flange fitting can change your experience. I have taken extra training in flange fitting and carry a variety of flange shapes & sizes from 9mm-24mm to fit you to the proper size.
-
A tongue-tie is a condition where the lingual frenulum (connective tissue under the baby’s tongue) is restrictive and not allowing the tongue to function properly. As an IBCLC with training and experience in ties I look at the whole picture of the dyad: pain, feeding history, latch, baby’s stamina, milk transfer, functional oral exam and baby’s body tension. I support infants with oral habilitation exercises pre and post tie releases.
-
Infant reflux is challenging for families. I help identify and address oral dysfunction, make individual feeding plans and offer alternative strategies for working through the spectrum of reflux.
-
IBCLCs work with bottle-feeding babies too! If your baby is coughing, gagging or refusing a bottle I can help. During the visit, I will bring several different sanitized bottles to assess how your baby does with shape and flow. I will assess your infant’s oral function and offer exercises as needed to work on bottle skills.
-
I also happily help people stop breastfeeding. If you need support in weaning an oversupply or in general I would love to help make you a plan that is the right pace for you.
Lactation Care
Prenatal Lactation Care (Virtual)
Connect with me for 1:1 support before your baby arrives to feel more confident and prepared for the early days of breastfeeding!
I recommend scheduling a prenatal visit anytime after 32 weeks of pregnancy. This consult is especially helpful if this if your first time breastfeeding or if you are a repeat parent who experienced challenges in the past or have any known risk factors for breastfeeding. We will cover individualized breastfeeding education and go over any feeding supplies you may have questions about. I will add your guess date to my calendar and keep in touch to schedule an initial home visit once baby has made their arrival so you don’t have to wait for an appointment time when you need help!
*Common medical concerns that may affect lactation include: previous breast surgeries, history of infertility, breast and nipple anatomy, IGT, planned early/NICU deliveries, planned C-sections, known infant medical concerns like cleft lip or palate, plans to exclusively pump, anxiety about feeding or anyone looking for anticipatory guidance around what to expect feeding a newborn.
Postpartum Lactation Care
(In-Home)
On a home visit, I take time to learn about you and baby’s health and birth history to understand how this may be impacting any feeding challenges you are experiencing.
For latch support, we will weigh baby on my scale in a dry diaper, support a deep latch at breast, observe baby’s feeding behaviors and weigh again to gauge how much milk baby is transferring during a feed. If you are pumping and bottle-feeding we will flange fit you and troubleshoot pumping and bottles too.
With consent, an infant oral & full body exam is conducted to evaluate tongue, oral function and body tension. After the visit, I send a detailed care plan with a summary, next steps and specific education.
Text support is available for one week following your visit for questions.
